For a decade, iBIO STEMgirls has been turning curious girls into confident innovators across the country. Hands-on experiments. Real STEM professionals in the room. Confidence-building challenges designed to flip the question from “Can I do this?” to “I can do this.”
This July, that proven formula finally comes home to Chicago — and to mark 10 years, we’re spotlighting 10 alumnae who show what STEMgirls can do.
One Hero, to start: Annie Serdar
Annie grew up extracting DNA from bananas in a STEMgirls classroom. This fall, she begins medical school at The Ohio State University, where she plans to specialize in pediatrics. In between, she completed a biomedical sciences degree at Marquette, interned with a breast surgeon at Northwestern Medicine, triaged 500+ patients in Panama with Global Brigades, and broke the national volunteer visit record as president of A Moment of Magic.
“The reason I’m passionate about pursuing medicine is because I love to use my knowledge of the human body to empower others to take ownership over their health,” Annie says.
That’s the arc STEMgirls is built to spark. And it’s only one of ten we’ll share with you over the next five weeks.
In the weeks leading up to camp, we’ll introduce you to more STEMgirls Heroes — and to the 8-year-old in Chicago who’s about to become the next one.
