Lake County has 122 bioscience companies and 33,000 bioscience employees, making it the largest human bioscience cluster in Illinois and probably the largest in the Midwest. Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, the only academic medical institution in the county, is at the hub of this ecosystem and adjacent to the Lovell Federal Health Care Center on the Great Lakes Naval Base (with both  V.A. and Navy hospitals).

The RFU campus, located in North Chicago, is within 15 minutes from 90% of these companies and last year launched its new 100,000 sf  Innovation and Research Park housing 6 disease-based research centers with space for industry collaborators. Its wet lab-based  Helix 51 Incubator will complete its 2nd anniversary in May.
